Meet Annie Carpenter

Annie Carpenter is the creator of SmartFLOW Yoga—a method that blends classical wisdom with modern movement science, rooted in inquiry, discipline, and love. With a background in professional dance and decades of study across yoga traditions, Annie brings unparalleled depth and clarity to her teaching.

Her journey began in her teens, practising at Integral Yoga under Swami Satchidananda while training at the Martha Graham Studio in New York. Inspired by the expressive power of movement, Annie later taught at Butler University, where she developed therapeutic movement for healing. In the 1990s, she studied extensively with Maty Ezraty, Chuck Miller, and Sri Pattabhi Jois, leading YogaWorks teacher trainings for years and mentoring many of today’s senior teachers.

SmartFLOW is the culmination of her lifelong devotion to the body as a path to truth. Grounded in anatomy, enriched by tradition, and elevated through mindfulness, Annie’s classes are known for their precision, warmth, and soul. Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, she teaches internationally and online via Glo, continuing to inspire students and teachers around the world.
